Are the year-long project lessons different from last year?

No.  Shoot 2017 offers 52 weekly lessons, just like Shoot 2016. We break down concepts into manageable sections, giving you a chance to concentrate on just one skill at a time. Many of our members sign up year after year to keep their practicing skills. The 8-week course condenses the core material.

Who can participate in Shoot Along?

Anyone over the age of 13 with a DSLR camera may participate in the year long and 8-week courses. Since the objective is to capture your family, we do not recommend this program for people interested in still life, landscape, commercial or other genres of photography.

Do I have to post images in the private Facebook group?

No. participating in the private Facebook group is optional! Some parents find it very useful to post images and receive encouraging feedback from others who are learning about photography at the same time. The group is a friendly, non-competitive option for those who would like to use it. There are separate groups for members doing the year long project and those doing the 8-week courses.

What kind of camera should I have?

The lessons are best followed with a DSLR, mirrorless, or creative-controlled camera and any lens. It is not necessary to purchase a new camera or any specific lens, flash or extra equipment.

I am new to photography. Will this be too advanced for me?

No. Lessons are designed for all levels. If you are new to photography you can learn and practice new concepts right away.

I am an experienced photographer. Will this be too easy for me?

No. Lessons are designed for all levels. If you are familiar with your camera, some of the weekly lessons will cover information you may know, so this is an opportunity to challenge yourself creatively.

Will you share business advice for professional photographers?

No. Shoot Along is not a forum for professional networking. The objective is to help parents take better pictures of their own families. If you are a professional photographer we absolutely welcome your participation with your personal imagery, but there will not be a component specifically geared toward active professionals.

Can I give a membership to a friend?

Yes! Shoot Along makes a great gift. Many people undertake the project with a friend, sister or teenage child. It’s wonderful to encourage each other throughout the year and see how your photography improves. Gift certificates are available in the shop.

Do I have to buy Photoshop Elements 14 for the editing videos when participating in the year-long course?

We demonstrate editing on Photoshop Elements 14 because it has sophisticated tools but is not as expensive as the professional versions of Photoshop or Lightroom. Its a great piece of software to invest in if you are just getting started with editing. You may apply the ideas demonstrated in Photoshop Elements 14 to most other software programs. We recommend that if you plan to learn from the videos, you have Photoshop Elements running on your computer so that you may practice demonstrated editing techniques yourself. If you have a higher level of Photoshop running, that is also acceptable.
