How does Shoot Along work?
Shoot Along offers two courses, 10 weekly lessons or 52 weekly lessons. We break down concepts into manageable sections, giving you a chance to concentrate on just one skill at a time. Many of our members sign up year after year to keep practicing their skills.
When do l get my lessons?
Your first lesson will arrive by email about one hour after you complete your registration. You will have immediate access to the first lesson on the website. Your second lesson will arrive by email exactly 7 days later and be simultaneously unlocked on the website, and so on every 7 days. There is not a set start date. There is not a day of the week that we send out the lessons in a batch. Your email delivery is based on when you join the project. New members may join Shoot Along at any time so you will find that you are working on different lessons than other members. It's a great way to explore the course at your own pace!
When does it start?
Registration for Shoot Along is now open! You may join the yearlong program at any time. After joining, you will get a confirmation of your subscription by email. Lessons are sent by email and also accessible right here on shootalong.com via this page. Each week, you can unlock a new lesson and practice new skills.
Registration for the 10-week course is offered several times per year. Registration is open for the current course until March 23rd, 2018. The next course will be open for registration June 10-17, 2018.
Who can participate in Shoot Along?
Anyone over the age of 13 with a DSLR camera may participate. Since the objective is to capture your family, we do not recommend this program for people interested in still life, landscape, commercial or other genres of photography.
How long will I have access to my lessons?
You will always have copies of your weekly lessons right in your email inbox. The same lessons are also available to view on shootalong.com while your subscription is active. If you purchase an annual subscription, your access will expire 12 months after the start date. If you purchase a 10-week subscription, your access will expire after 10 weeks.
Do I have to post images in the private Facebook group?
No. participating in the private Facebook group is optional! Some parents find it very useful to post images and receive encouraging feedback from others who are learning about photography at the same time. The group is a friendly, non-competitive option for those who would like to use it. We do not guarantee that pictures posted to the Facebook group will receive constructive criticism from a moderator or from other members, but the more you participate the more likely you are to make connections and build friendly camaraderie.
What kind of camera should I have?
The lessons are best followed with a DSLR, mirrorless, or creative-controlled camera and any lens. It is not necessary to purchase a new camera or any specific lens, flash or extra equipment.
I am new to photography. Will this be too advanced for me?
No. Lessons are designed for all levels. If you are new to photography you can learn and practice new concepts right away.
I am an experienced photographer. Will this be too easy for me?
No. Lessons are designed for all levels. If you are familiar with your camera, some of the weekly lessons will cover information you may know, so this is an opportunity to challenge yourself creatively.

Will you share business advice for professional photographers?
No. Shoot Along is not a forum for professional networking. The objective is to help parents take better pictures of their own families. If you are a professional photographer we absolutely welcome your participation with your personal imagery, but there will not be a component specifically geared toward active professionals. We discourage discussions about images that are created during client sessions.
